Natural products have recently become the focus of increased research interest, due to their potential for pharmacological activities. In this paper, we report on the cytotoxic effects of ethanolic extracts from Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau (CTE) against human pancreatic cancer cells. The primary objective of this study was to determine the mechanisms inherent in CTE-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis in PANC-1 and AsPC-1 cells. We found that CTE induced cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner, as determined by the results of an MTT reduction assay, an LDH release assay and colony formation assay. As expected, CTE induced characteristic apoptosis signs in PANC-1 and AsPC-1 cells, including apoptotic body via Hoechst staining. These results indicate that CTE may contains bioactive materials and potential candidates as a chemotherapeutic agent in human pancreatic cancer cells. These results indicate that CTE may contain bioactive materials and potential candidates as the chemotherapeutic agent in human pancreatic cancer cells.
